Dog Found in Barn ‘Scared to Death of People’

Every little thing is going to be alright, now that Bob Marley the dog and his partner, Rita, are in the care of the Southern Cross Animal Rescue.

The Laurel, a Mississippi-based rescue shared that its “hearts are broken for these sweet babies,” regarding two dogs who arrived there on Monday night after being found in a barn behind an elderly woman’s home.

While Rita was the better cared for of the two, Bob was in horrible condition, unable to see or eat because of all of his overgrown fur, and emitting a stench that was hard for rescuers to describe.

“The smell is unbelievable,” said a Facebook post shared on Tuesday, featuring photos of the dogs. “The only way to describe it is that he smells like towels that have been soured for months — only worse.”

The neglected pups’s overgrown fur was shaved at the Parkside Animal Hospital, where both may have to be treated for skin infections.

“[Bob] is scared to death of people but finds comfort in the female he was found with,” the post explains. “[Rita] doesn’t look nearly as bad as he does but is still completely matted with very few teeth left.”

Although the rescue has been at max capacity for several weeks, and it doesn’t have any available crates for these dogs, it’s making an effort to help them but will need donations to cover their care.

While the road ahead may be difficult, picking names for them was easy. “Naming the male was pretty simple since he looks just like Bob Marley!” the post said, “So we named the female after Bob’s wife, Rita.”
