Why Shelter Dogs Don’t Have More Health Issues

Pets aren’t free from the rumor mill.

One of the more damaging and persistent rumors in the pet world is that shelter dogs are somehow less healthy than other animals.

PEOPLE Pet Vet Dr. Evan Antin is here to tell you that just isn’t true. Of course, there is always a chance that any pet you welcome into your home might have some health problems, but Dr. Antin, a proud dog dad to a shelter pup himself, knows from experience that these problems are “minor, treatable, inexpensive issues to deal with.”

Some of the most common minor health problems Dr. Antin sees in recently adopted pets are skin conditions, external and internal parasites, and kennel cough.

All of these are health hiccups that can be quickly treated by a professional.

Basically, as Dr. Antin summarizes, these issues are “no big deal” and not anything that should stop you from giving a home to a loving, needy shelter pet.
