Cause: Potential for listeria
Announcement: FDA announcement dated Dec. 5, 2018 (archived here)
What was recalled: 2 lb. packages of Cow Pie with Lot #81917 (processed on Aug. 19, 2017)

“Cow Pie is a fresh frozen meats product intended to feed raw to dogs and cats,” according to the recall announcement, which added that the products were distributed in Alaska, Oregon and Washington through retail stores and direct delivery.

The packages are purple and white and tube-shaped (“chubs”), and the lot code is printed on an orange sticker on the back.

Routine testing by the Washington State Department of Agriculture found the potential for listeria contamination. No pet illnesses have been reported to date.

Columbia River Natural Pet Foods, based in Vancouver, Washington, is a small pet food company that doesn’t even appear to have a working website anymore. One of the company’s last Facebook posts, about 2 years ago, says,

“Our apologies!! Our Website is currently down due to the loss of our website guru … and me being a dog person not a computer person. I assure you Columbia River Natural Pet Foods and Boulder Creek Kennels is still going strong and I will have the website up and back online soon.”

Customers who have purchased any bags of Cow Pie pet food with the lot code above should stop feeding them and return the products to the retailer for a refund.
